Respect. referred to Mr. W. H. White's Sheriff of Bladen Co whose attention is called to the unofficerlike tone of his reply to Capt Rutherford's communication. Official etiquette and courtesy is indispensable and must be observed in all official intercourse. This paper to be returned with such explanations as you may have to make.

Sir

I have no intention of disrespect to Capt Rutherford or anyone else, nor to disobey orders Capt R H Lyons is responsible for his own conduct under General order so we are ending to my understanding I am only responsible for myself & those under my controll there is no law or orders of General Sickels that makes a constable responsible to me [[?]] [[?]] for his conduct that I have seen I have never required threats held over my head such as those made by Capt Rutherford to force me to the performance of any duty required by the military or civil authority

Respectfully
