Smithville October 10th 1864
Gen. A. Rutherford H.Qrs. USS.
Dear Sir I address you with these few lines to inform you that I was at your office on Monday while I was in town but my being so unwell I had to return home so time was short and I could not get to see you but I  hope that my letter may do the same things here are not like I wish to report for there is a man whose name is John Swain who has graned a poor colord woman some land to work for her own use if she would give her chile which she did for the use of the land but seene the crope has been made he call for one third of her crop and says that she must not move one grain of it untill it be divided by the [[?]] so if he dose that he will cheat the poor woman out of the work which her daughter has don as all this year so if you please see in to this matter for it is hard times particularly among the colord people in this part of our countray.
