Wilmington N.C. September 4th 1868 -
General Nelson A. Miles
Asst Comr B.R.F.&AL

Sir
I have the honor to request advice and information on the following subjects -

Nine years ago from April last I entered into a verbal agreement with Mr William Middleton for a piece of Ground at Kenanvsille Duplin Co. N.C. I was to immediately assume possession which I did - and if ever I paid for the land it was of course to be mine - if not it was of course to remain as it was, I paid $20 - and have tax receipts showing that I have paid the taxes seven years - Circumstances over which I had no control prevented me from paying for the land in this. He now prepares to oust me - I am a widow and am without any protection, and while my character is yet above the surface I am very unfortunate Have three children now in the place. while I am supporting them by teaching school at Lillington.

What is best for me to do -
Yours very Respectfully
Mary Ann McCullough
