Sir:-

I have the honor to submit the following complaint and to ask that you will compel a specific performance of the contract on the part of the person complained of.

At the April Term of the of the Superior Court of this (Bladen) County, - 1868, Sam Wright, a Freedman, was tried and convicted of Larceny, and was ordered by the Judge into the custody of the Sheriff until the fine and costs were paid - amounting to $75.

To avoid going to jail, Sam was permitted an opportunity of finding some one who would be responsible for the fine and costs, and he came to your petitioner, the undersigned (who is a Cooper by trade) and made this verbal agreement, in the presence of John J.
