Flemington N.C. March 16th 1868
A. Ruthford Esq

Sir
Your letter of August 26th 1867 was duly received. I have to inform you that one of the children named in your order, named Billy has been taken from my charge and controls, by Mr John Maltsby[[guess]] of Whitesville, and put under the control of her grand mother who is not a fit person to have the child under her controls. I am very anxious that the child should be placed under the care and charge of Adam Smith again. Any order that you may make in the case will be thankfully received by the close friends of the child
I remain your obedt sevt.
Michael Smith
