New York. June 17th 1868.

Gen. Rutherford,
Henry Smith a colored boy was in your employ in year 1866 and now engaged with my Father as Coachman, desired me to write to you for him & beg of your kind offices in his behalf in sending to him the address of Mr. William Reed - Henry was in the employ of this Reed & gave him $20.00, to keep for him & then worked for him for the term of five weeks at the rate of five dollars a week & this Reed never paid him his wages or the money placed in his hands - I wrote to this Reed last winter for Henry but I have never rec'ed any answer - You will be helping an honest boy and prevent him from being wronged by sending him the address of Mr. Reed, or by collecting the $45.00 and sending it, to Dr. E. Vanderpool 133 McDougal Street New York City -
A. G. Vanderpool.
