Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands,
Office Superintendent of Education,
Raleigh, N.C., November 14th 1868.

Capt. Allan Rutherford
Wilmington N.C.

I am directed by the Asst Comr to request immediate and early information on the following points.
Exact Location of all schools in your Sub District.
The number of day and night schools.
The number of White and colored teachers.
The names of the teachers, and their P.O. address.
The number of pupils in each school.
The same of Sabbath schools.
State whether the school buildings are owned by Freedmen or others and the names of the owners.

The above questions are made necessary by a recent order of the Comr. Bu. and in consequence of the failure of many teachers to give full and accurate information. I am required to verify my report in these particulars monthly, and must depend on your monthly report for the same.
Yours respectfully
H. C. Vogell.
Supt. of Education.
