THE GALLERY SCENE

Zarina Hashmi

Zarina Hashmi, who has been living in New York, makes a welcome appearance at Cymroza art gallery under an arrangements with New Delhi's Art Heritage,

Born in Aligarh in 1937, Zarina studied graphics with the internationally known S.W. Hayter in Paris and later in West Germany and Japan. Many, many years ago, she had a fine show at Pundole art gallery. The current show is rather sparse and, to some extent, too "modern" to please the average connoisseur. There are not only very avant-garde and geometrically severe graphics but equally austere works which are closer to sculpture.

Appropriate

Among the more lyrical (and comparatively conventional) works we may count "Seed 2", which is an enlarged version of the theme, "Agni", which shows petals like flames, and "Blossom house", which is again appropriately titled.

The titles of some of the architectural graphics are quite interesting, e.g., "One morning the city was golden", "Thousand night away" and "Shelters". Also, we have "Memories of Bangkok" and "Spaces to hide".

It is a pity that there is this time no introduction to the catalogue. However, for old time's sake, let us give Zarina a big hand.
