Zarina Hashmi show after long time
By DNYANESHWAR NADKARNI

Zarina Hashmi, the well-known expatriate artist, returns to the city after a long interval, showing her graphics at the Cymroza art gallery. The 20-odd works date from 1973, and it is interesting to note that two works of 1984 are the simplest and easiest to respond to. These are the large-sized lithograph "Seed 2" and the lithograph "Agni". Also poetically conceived are the lithograph and etching "Blossom house".

There was a unique vividness in Zarina's graphics when they were shown here at Pundole years ago. Over the years an understandable austerity has crept into such etchings as "One morning the city was golden", "Gret city" and "Shelters".

Among the works newly arrived from Art Heritage of Delhi (who originally sponsored this show) are works which are very "mod". They will continue to puzzle those who are addicts of Zarina's work and who have liked the lyrical note in some of the graphics on show.

One's guess is that these are continuing phases of the expression of basically the same sensibility. There is no diversion here; only progression. It is for us to find out from which year to the present day.
