Mrs. Roosevelt Aids China Relief
She Buys a Dress For Madame Chiang

A made-in-America Chinese dress, one of the many that go on sale Monday for Chinese relief, was bought by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt for Mme. Chiang Kaishek at a preview today in the Arnold Constable & Co. store on Fifth Ave.

Mrs. Roosevelt, accompanied by the Chinese Consul General, Dr. Tsune Chi-yu, selected a pattern called China Forever--May the Chinese Republic Live 10,000 Years--for the wife of China's generalissimo. Mrs. Roosevelt also bought two for her own use.

The dresses that will be sold for the relief of embattled republic are made in prints of legendary Chinese figures, ceremonial fans and other characters of authentic Chinese lore, Isaac Liberman, president of the store, explained. Some of them were modeled at the preview by Lee Ya-ching, a Chinese deb and aviatrix.
The prints are to be sold in all stores throughout the country with the hope ultimately of marketing 3,000,000 yards of the material.
Meanwhile, it was announced that Mrs. Vincent Astor, Clare Boothe and Dean Virginia C. Gildersleeve of Barnard College, and 77 other prominent American women had joined the National Women's Committee of United China Relief with headquarters at 1780 Broadway.
To Help Raise.
They will aid in the campaign to raise $5,000,000 for relief work among refugees, orphans and wounded in China, beginning May 19. On that day, women's clubs throughout the country will hold luncheons and meetings to consider methods of relieving suffering in China.
Others on the committee are Mrs. Arthur Biddle, Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, Mrs. Marshall Field III, Dr. Mary E. Woolley, Anita Loos, Helen Gahagan, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Mrs. Margaret Sanger.
