HATS HERE PHENOMENA TO CHINESE AVIATRIX
Her New Plane Will Help Raise Funds for China War Work
In a brand new Piper Cub monoplane which someone is going to win in a raffle for 25 cents, China's No. 1 aviatrix, Lee Ya Ching, took off from Malton Tuesday for Hamilton. She flew the gleaming red cabin plane a few minutes after arriving from New York by American airlines.
The beautiful Chinese girl is here to give a send-off to the Friends of China campaign to raise funds for Chinese war victims. The fund will be handled in China by the Red Cross. The plane was donated to the fund by an anonymous friend.
Dressed in a native Chinese costume, she was greeted by Hubert Pocock, chairman of the Toronto executive committee of the Friends of China, and Chong Ying, unofficial mayor of Toronto's Chinatown.

Hopes to Fly bomber
With 550 flying hours logged. Miss Lee has flown in China and the U.S. and hopes to wind up piloting a bomber across the Atlantic like Jacqueline Logan, famous U.S. aviatrix. Most of her flying has been done in light aircraft, she said, but she has about 20 hours as co-pilot on a tri-motor Junkers transport on a Chinese air line.
She loves Canadian clothes but not the "phenomena" Western girls call hats. Ever since she arrived in this continent three years ago, she has shunned hats. They just don't go with Chinese dress, she says. the only time she covers her long, jet black hair is when she's flying in an open plane. Then she wears a helmet.

Safety Strap Broke
She has bailed out once over San Francisco. She was doing a slow roll, she said ruefully, and was upside down when her safety strap broke. naturally, she went on with a big grin, she fell out and had the presence of mind to pull the ripcord.
Toronto will get a chance Thursday to see how this modern miss of the old world can fly when she will lead, in the new Cub, the annual Canadian air cruise to Algonquin park. About 40 planes are expected to take part. With Miss Lee in her red monoplane at the head, the machines will fly in a "V" for victory formation. Many of the planes will come from the U.S.
At Hamilton Miss Lee was given a civic reception and later spoke to Toronto Thursday morning in time to take part in a big parade being staged here by Toronto Chinese. Accompanying her on the trip to Hamilton was Jack Gibson of the Piper Cub Co.
