BETWEEN YOU AND ME

CHINESE COMEBACK

When Premier Hepburn met the pretty Chinese woman flyer, Miss Lee Ya-Ching, who is here to raise funds for the friends of China Relief Society, he told her about his coming initiation in New York into the Saints and Sinners' Club... "I don't know which classification I'll be in," he said, and quick as a flash the Chinese girl replied, "As far as China is concerned, you are a Saint."...The United Church, and she was guest of honor to a gathering at the Royal York last night to arrange for the service. In the group were Dr. A. J. Brace, Mrs. Anne Hymus, Father Moriarity, Dock Yip, George Chow, Thomas Wu, Father Sharkey and Father Leonard.

NOT SUPERSTITIOUS

The fact that to-day is the 13th has not kept dozens of altarbound couples from taking that important step...It is a nice Saturday in the second most popular wedding month, and your people thought only of that, pushing superstition into the background... But "Cal" Hutchinson and "Mac" Church, deliberately picked the 13th as being their lucky day... They met on August 13. Mac's birthday is on June 13, and Mac gave Cal her engagement ring on May 13... and with that many 13s in their story, they just couldn't be married on any other date... Cal is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hutchinson, and Mac's parents are Dr. and Mrs. W. J. Gardiner.

WOMEN'S PART

It was an impressive scene yesterday in the Eaton Auditorium as a capacity audience of the Women's Canadian Club heard Hon. J. T. Thorson issue a call to Reconsecration... A silent and thoughtful gathering heard his address, when besides outlining the special war work to be done by women, he appealed to them to continue cheerfully with what might seem to be a monotonous tasks, declaring that in women's keeping was the morale of the nation... Union Jacks, white ensigns and the Air Force flag decorated the platform, and special guests were women already filling leading roles in Canada's war effort, Matron Elizabeth Smellie, organizer of the Canadian Women's Army Corps; Mrs. Barnston Tudball, assistant acting commandant of the Red Cross Transport Section. Mrs. Clifford Beatty, head of the Red Cross Administration; Matron Brohman and Matron Howe, of Tornonto Military Hospitals.

VISITORS

To be one of three women aboard a troopship bearing Air Force men from New Zealand and Australia to Canada was the exciting experience of Mrs. R. de Gorter, who is a guest at the King Edward Hotel with her husband... The interesting Dutch couple, from Batavia in the Dutch East Indies, will be here for several months, Mr. de Gorter on a trade mission, his wife to write a special series of articles on Canada for the leading Dutch East Indies paper, "Java Bode"... Mrs. de Gorter was at one time considered the finest woman bridge player in Holland, and is hoping to get into one of the bridge clubs while she is in Toronto... They were in London during the contrast to their trip across the Pacific here... Both are delighted with Canada. In fact, they though the Rockies unsurpassed even by Switzerland... Life in the Indies is quite different from here, they told us... There, people of moderate means live in hug houses and have plenty of servants... All social and club life is concentrated in the morning and evening. The heat and humidity make the afternoons just something to be endured.
