The Chinese Are Fighting Democracy's War

The United States is moving swiftly in two directions to help China.

First our fleet is on hand, poised and ready for action any moment Japan gets out of line. Secondly, the citizens of the United States, deeply aware of the hardships the Chinese are undergoing to preserve their democracy are sending medical supplies and funds for the relief of Chinese refugees.

The Chinese do not want anyone else to do their fighting. They insist they can, in time, take care of the Japanese invaders. Their cry is for equipment and relief materials.

We can leave the problem of military equipment in the hands of our government. Planes and defense materials are moving into China. But because we think during a war chiefly in terms of fighting equipment, it is not likely that the government will be able to do much about relieving the thousands upon thousands of Chinese who have sacrificed their homes, and a part of their families to preserve the Oriental stronghold of democracy-the Republic of China.

There are many demands upon the incomes of Americans. There are many projects asking that they give. Then there are taxes coming along. But American sympathy with the Chinese dates back many years, almost to the revolution. It was enhanced with the sinking of the American gun boat, the Panay. Since then the simmering American antagonism toward the tactics of the Japanese has slowly come to a boil. Today, as the Japanese government well knows, we are close to the breaking point. And cautious Japan is showing signs of fear of the striking power of the U. S. Navy.

The plight of the Chinese has been set forth in Toledo in the last two days by a local daughter of the republic. Miss Lee Ya Ching, who has flown her own plane some 50,000 miles in America to carry the appeal for Chinese relief. She has told her story impressively and nearly two million dollars worth of American medical aid and food already is on the way.

Our strongest ally in the Orient is China. Americans should realize this and keep faith with the Chinese who are fighting valiantly their share of the world's war for the survival of democracy.
