THE BATTLEFRONTS OF THE FAR PACIFIC

As General MacArthur smashed enemy gun emplacements on Manila Bay (1), Japanese reinforcements were landed on Luzon Island (detailed map, Page 4). In the Netherlands Indies the enemy occupied Samarinda (2) and conducted aerial reconnaissance over Southeastern Borneo generally, over Eastern Java (4) and over Medan (6). Tokyo alleged that its dive bombers had sunk two Netherland cruisers and a merchantman and damaged a third Netherland cruiser and an American warship of this type south of Kangean Island (3). The Japanese also alleged bomb hits on ships in Malacca Strait (6). Raids and artillery action again marked the siege of Singapore (5). Around Rangoon (7) American and British fliers shot down at least ten and probably twenty enemy raiders. The ground fronts were quiet.
