Thousands of homeless waifs roam the countRYSIDE only to die of starvation or from disease.*
[[strikethrough]] Thousands of crippled and maimed who have survived must be helped. [[/strikethrough]] I know that you do not have to be sold on why we should help China for humanitarian reasons. China deserves your help today too because she is the last frontier of freedom in the east.
[[circled]] You have a saying in your country -- which is "God helps those who help themselves." It was said by a very wise man - Benjamin Franklin, an American Confucius, and it is a saying that has become a part of your national philosophy. Nobody can doubt that when you help China today you are helping America defend her democracy. [[/circled]]
I have heard it stated here that China is as near to America as tires on your car and the tin cans in your grocery store. So long as China retains its territorial integrity, I can assure you that access to Far Eastern sources of materials vital to America's defense will remain open. For from the Far East America obtains 98% of her rubber, 86% of her tin, 86% of your tungsten and vast amounts of quinine, tungoil, manganese, and 100% of her hemp supplies. If the Far East falls under the heal of totalitarian power the effects upon America economy would be disastrous. It is for this reason that I say that China is fighting as much for America and for the preservation of freedom as it is fighting
