It seems to be now the conviction of the majority of the American people that American has only one friend, Great Britain, and that the British navy is the first line of defense of the United States in the Atlantic ocean. May I humbly submit that America has another friend just as staunch, just as effective, just as grateful, although a little more silent and somewhat less in the public eye, and that friend is China. If the British navy is the first line of defense of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean,I think the Chinese army is equally important as the first line of national defense of the United States in the Pacific. It is China's determination to resist the aggressor in the Paoifio, that is responsible for bogging down more than 2,000,000 of the self-style "invincible" Imperial army of Japan. It is China's supreme sacrifice for more than three years that is responsible for tying down at least half of the Japanese naval forces along the Chinese coast. It is China's contribution towards effectively [[strikethrough]] halting [[/strikethrough]] stopping the immediate Japanese invasion of Southeastern Asia, after the fall of Holland [[strikethrough]] two caitulation [[/strikethrough]] and of France, that so far has kept available the most important sources of the two essential war supplies, tin and rubber, to the United States.
Let me not forget the traditional [[strikethrough doureness and [[/strikethrough]] and reticence of a Chinese maiden. Let me not forget my [[strikethrough]] main [[/strikethrough]] function here tonight which is to introduce the main speaker to you. I am happy to say that it is much easier for me to introduce Mr.Wells than for some of you to introduce a Chinese speaker. To begin with Mr.Wells than for some of you to introduce a Chinese speaker. To begin with Mr.Wells is a world renowned scholar and writer who does not need any introduction anywhere in the world. Secondly his name is so easy for a Chinese girl to pronounce. I remember once upon a time in Shanghai and American gentleman was asked to introduce a Chinese speaker. He said,"LADIES and gentlemen, may I present to you Mr.Sneeze", while the real name of the speaker of the evening was Mr.Ka-ohu. Ladies and gentlemen I have the great pleasure to present to you Mr.H.G.Wells of Great Britain and of the world.
