Yours of 21st inst is to hand. I made the following contract with certain Freedmen some time ago. They were to cut wood for me for the N.C. Rail Road, for which I was to give them 60 cts pr cord, 1 peck of meal & 3½ lbs meat pr week, less than 6 cords not to count a week, which was a big price. They were to receive the money when the Rail Road paid me. The Road has paid a part of the money to me & I have paid a corresponding part to them. I have complied strictly with the contract & have been considerably molested by them. This contract was not written but can be easily proven by witness. If you have
