F-4-d. Those enlisted men who served in the Regular Navy prior to July 1, 1925, who were either in the Navy or Naval Reserve Force on that date and thereafter transfer to the Naval Reserve after 20 years' naval service.
F-5. Enlisted men who first enlist in the Navy after July 1, 1925 or who reenlist with broken service after that date and transfer to the Naval Reserve after 20 years' naval service.

ORGANIZED RESERVE

O-1. Enlisted men of the surface component.
O-2. Enlisted men of the aviation component.

VOLUNTEER RESERVE

The enlisted men of the Volunteer Reserve are divided into classes designated as follows:
V-1. Enlisted men associated with battalions or divisions of the Organized Reserve.
V-2. Enlisted men associated with aviation squadrons of the Organized Reserve.
V-3. Enlisted men, mostly of communication ratings, comprising the enlisted personnel of the Naval Communication Reserve.
V-4. Enlisted men for the performance of duties outside the normal scope of their naval ratings.
V-5. Men enlisted as seaman second class for elimination flight training preliminary to appointment as aviation cadet
V-6. Enlisted men not eligible for any other class of the Volunteer Reserve, including former enlisted men of the Navy or Naval Reserve and men without prior naval service.

MERCHANT MARINE RESERVE

M-1. Enlisted men of the Merchant Marine Reserve.

ENLISTMENTS-BY WHOM MADE

Classes O-1, O-2, V-1 and V-2, by the commanding officers of the division or squadron near their places of residence. Class V-3, by the commanding officer of the Naval Communication Reserve section or unit near their places of residence. Class V-4. Enlistments in this class will be made in accordance with such instructions as may be issued from time to time by the Bureau of Navigation.
Class V-5. Enlistments in this class are made only upon specific authority of the Bureau of Navigation in each case, as stated in the instructions concerning the procurement of aviation cadets.
Class V-6. Enlistments in or transfers to this class will be made in accordance with instructions contained in Bureau of Navigation Manual.
Class M-1. Enlistments in this class shall be accomplished by recruiting officers designated for this purpose by the Bureau of Navigation.
All men enlisted in the Naval Reserve are required to obligate themselves to serve throughout any war or national emergency if their services are required, irrespective of the date of expiration of enlistment. Enlistments and reenlistments in the Naval Reserve are terms of 4 years. Enlisted men may be permitted to extend their enlistments for periods of 1, 2, 3, or 4 years under the same regulations as prescribed for extensions of enlistments in the regular Navy.

AGES FOR ORIGINAL ENLISTMENTS

The limiting ages for original enlistments in the Naval Reserve are as follows:

Upper age limits are to nearest birthday.
Especially desirable men over the foregoing upper age limits may be enlisted with the consent of the Bureau of Navigation in each case.
Minors shall not be enlisted without the written consent of a parent or guardian.
The lower age limit of 17 years is prescribed by statute and cannot be waived.

ENLISTMENTS IN ORGANIZED RESERVE AND VOLUNTEER RESERVE, CLASSES O-1, O-2, V-1 AND V-2

(1)Men will be enlisted in classes O-1, O-2, V-1, and V-2 to fill vacancies in the allowed quotas subject to the provisions of this article.
(2)Men without previous naval service may be enlisted in classes O-1, O-2, V-1, and V-2 in the rating of apprentice seaman or mess attendant third class, or in such higher ratings as may be authorized by the Bureau
