TO ALL MEMBERS           -16-           February 16, 1943

abruptly and without ceremony during the latter part of August 1942. Since that time with your organization has again successfully stood as the protecting bulwark against what would have meant practically the complete destruction of everything that we have gained during more than a decade of battling.

The reason that this fight which has extended through months, was especially difficult was because it was fraught with an obvious attempt on the part of the enemy to use the war to tear down our standards.

All of us have been informed through our chairmen, and the convention, and through the pages of our paper, the AIR LINE PILOT, and through membership letters, of all the aspects of this fight, which is now drawing to a successful close.

Briefly, they approached us individually, collectively, and in small groups, but always with the same purpose -- to tear out standard to pieces. All of these obstacles have been successfully surmounted and on February 16, 1943, we signed a Supplemental Agreement with American airlines, Inc., and the week beginning February 22 we shall sign a Supplemental Agreement with United Air Lines Transport Corporation. We have reached an agreement with Northeast Airlines; however, the president has refused to sign it, and the matter is now before the Mediation Board. The ICD of TWA is operating under a satisfactory salary arrangement, and the pilots are at present satisfied. Many other supplemental agreements are pending but now that the log jam has been broken by the completing of UAL's and AA's Supplemental Agreements, things ought to move right alone.

In plain words, the whole picture has been debunked and put on a fairer and just footing, and again -- who stood in the breech and faced unflinchingly and successfully all of our enemies? None other than your valiant little old battling ALPA, which is in there pitching for you 24 hours out of every day with no letup.

Speaking of things to tell that new man, who, if he is not told, may very well figure that everything he has in the profession he has entered has been handed him on a silver platter and completely void of effort, he certainly should be put straight on this point and informed of the true facts, and what the Association has done for the air line pilots just during the past several months. This should be plenty convincing -- even minus all of ALPA's previous accomplishments through the year. All this together or even a small part of it should convince anyone beyond a shadow of a doubt that the thing to do is to belong!

Keep pitching and keep doing your part to keep your organization out in front and there will be no reason to worry about the postwar period.
