Emergency Landing

Trip 53, January 11, 1947, Airplane NC 28323, operating late, left Massena, N.Y. after completion of routine Customs clearance.

During take-off I noticed that my left landing light was burning dimly. Since all other electrical equipment seemed to be functioning normally at that time, I continued the flight in the direction of my next scheduled landing, Burlington, Vt.

At Beaudette, P.Q., after eliminating all of the possible causes of the malfunctioning landing light, I then came to the conclusion that my troubles were caused by either dead batteries or some other electrical equipment.

The nearest airport at which I could get competent qualified service was at our base at Montreal, P.Q. After checking via radio with U.S. Customs at Burlington, Vt., I found that I would only be held in technical violation for landing in a foreign country without an outward bound Customs clearance. Since this was entirely an emergency procedure, an emergency was duly declared and I proceeded and landed at Montreal, P.Q.

After the batteries were changed at Montreal, the flight was continued and terminated at New York.
