It is the responsibility of the pilot desiring GCA assistance to establish communication with the appropriate control tower for preliminary approach instructions. The control tower in this case is "Navy Floyd Bennet "Tower". The pilot will then be given a frequency for contacting the GCA unit.

This unit is able to set up for all Floyd Bennet runways except runway 060.

All headings are given in three figures --- (Example: 090--"Zero niner zero"

Emergency Procedures

(a) PPI Runs
(b) Gyro Failures
(c) Engine Failures
(d) Lost Plane Procedure

(a) A PPI run will be made when "FLOYD BENNET GCA" is unable to give elevation and azimuth information. The aircraft is handled in the normal manner except that in the final leg, the pilot is assigned definate [[definite]] altitudes to descend to and at 2 miles from the end of runway he is instructed to "descend at his own discretion". PPI runs are also used for aircraft in distress and must be directed immediately to the field to the closest runway available.

(b) If a pilot loses the use of his gyro, he is directed to "steer right" or "steer left" ----- In this manner he is directed in down-wind and crosswind into the precision sweep area. Then he is timed at a 3 degree turn per second and is squared away on a heading that will bring him into the hot runway. The final controller directs him by means of the "steer right", "stop turn", "steer left" orders to end of runway.

(c) Upon being informed by the pilot of an engine failure of a multi-engined aircraft, "FLOYD BENNET GCA" will so maneuver the plane that it will be unnecessary to make turns into the bad engine.

(d) When this unit is alerted by ATC or Operations to search for a lost plane "FLOYD BENNET GCA" will sweep a 360 degree, 20 and 30 mile area. Every five minutes a blind broadcast will be made on Tower Frequencies requesting the aircraft to fly at 3000 feet. If contact is made, the aircraft will be assigned identifying headings and vectored to the field.

The Navy approved weather minimum for Floyd Bennet are: 100' ceiling 1/4 mile visibility.
