REGULATIONS

Section 3030 COCKPIT PROCEDURE 

GENERAL

1. Before leaving the loading ramp, the Captain will check the exact amount of fuel in each tank to insure that the fuel supply is adequate and at least equals the minimum authorized by the Flight Superintendent clearing the flight. All gyroscopic instruments will also be uncaged so their operation can e checked while taxing prior to take-off.

2. Airplanes will not be moved from the loading ramp until the Captain has received proper signal from the Station employee on duty or before being cleared for taxiing on the airport by the airport control tower -- if an airport control tower is installed. The First Officer (or Captain if the Agent is on his side) shall acknowledge the Station employee's signal promptly by a smart military hand salute.

3. Radio headsets shall be worn by either the Captain or First Officer from the time the plane leaves the loading ramp until arrival at the loading ramp at the next station. During this time continuous listening watch will be maintained on either tower or Company frequency, except when flight conditions and static conditions are such that the Captain considers it advisable that both members of the crew maintain listening watch on radio range. (See Section 3101 Par. 14.)

4. While taxiing and during run-up ad immediately during the interval the throttles are being advanced for take-off, the First Officer shall steady the wheel until the Captain takes over.

5. Before take-off, Captains will check controls and run up engines as outlines in Section 3039. Take-off will not be attempted unless engines, instruments and airplane controls are functioning properly. Run-up should be made with airplane headed into the wind. Upon completion of run-up the airplane shall be parked crossways to the direction of the run-up in such position that the crew can observe all landing aircraft. If there are no landing aircraft, tax to take-off position and start take-off immediately. NOTE: This procedure is not required where an airport control tower is in operation.

6. Each Captain is requested to thoroughly familiarize himself with the terrains, obstructions, etc., immediately adjacent to the end of each take-off runway at all airports and shall execute his take-off insofar as practicable with a view to taking advantage of his knowledge of this terrain in the event of any emergency.

7. Captains are cautioned to check their Company clearance instruction carefully before departure and proceed to the point cleared to unless re-clearance instructions are received from the Flight Superintendent on duty except in emergencies, then, in the opinion of the Captain, deviations are necessary to avoid immediate danger of such deviations are required because of weather conditions, and Captain is unable to contact the Dispatcher on duty for instruction (See EMERGENCY PROCEDURE)
