Dear Members of the Retirement Committee:

Recently I wired our Washington Office as follows:

"WHAT IS THE STATUS OF OUR PENSION BILL. DISCUSS WITH LATIMER AND LET ME KNOW."

In response to this, I received the following wired reply:

"HETEL LATIMER INFORMS ME HE HAS 4875 QUESTIONNAIRES AND 1010 EXCERPTS OF RECORDS OF MEMBERS WHO DID NOT RETURN QUESTIONNAIRE. HE ESTIMATES BETWEEN 400 AND 500 MORE RECORDS ARE NEEDED TO GET COMPLETE DATA ON MEMBERSHIP SINCE JANUARY 1, 1940. HE UNDERSTANDS HEADQUARTERS WORKING UP THESE RECORDS WHICH SHOULD BE IN SHORTLY. HE WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE INTELLIGENT PROGRESS REPORT AS SOON AS ALL RECORDS ARE RECEIVED AND EXACT NUMBER KNOWN."

In discussing this wire with Mr. Connors, he informs me that such is not the case and called my attention to the following letter which he wrote to Mr. Stiles on December 29:

"We finally reached the 1000 (4x6) cards goal you desired on inactive and ex-members of ALPA.

As you know, we are still holding the pension questionnaires for executive-inactive members. Is it your wish that we fill in cards on the executive-inactive and then destroy those that we receive a questionnaire on?

We are about to close up shop on this phase of the activity unless you desire otherwise."
