shall be, after the enactment hereof, in the service of one or more em-ployers for compensation.

"(c) When Individual Is In Service--An individual is in the service of an employer if (I) he is subject to continuing authority of the employer to supervise and direct the manner of rendition of his service, and (ii) he either renders service to an employer as a chief pilot, check pilot, test pilot, first pilot, reserve pilot, or copilot, or (iii) he holds a certificate, issued by the Administrator of Civil Aeronautics pursuant to the Civil Air Regulations of the Civil Aeronautics Board, as a commercial pilot or an airline transport pilot. 

"(d) Interstate and Foreign Commerce--The term "interstate and foreign commerce" shall mean the carriage by aircraft of persons or property as a common carrier for compensation or hire under a certificate issued pursuant to section 401 of the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938, as amended, or the carriage of mail by aircraft, in commerce between res-pectively--

"A place in any state of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and a place in any other state of the United States, or between places in the same state of the United States through the air space of any place outside thereof; or between places in the same territory or possession of the United States, or the District of Columbia;

"A place in any state of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and any place in a territory or possession of the United States, and a place in any other territory or possession of the United States:

"A place in the United States and any place outside thereof, whether such commerce moves wholly by aircraft or partly by aircraft and partly by other forms of transportation, and

"A place outside of the United States and another place outside of the United States, if such carriage is performed by aircraft eligible for resignation under section 501 (b) of the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938, as amended. 

"(e) Compensation--The term "compensation" shall mean all remuneration paid to an individual for services rendered as a pilot to one or more employers, including the cash value of all remuneration paid in any medium other than cash; except that such terms shall not include--

1. The amount of any payment made to, or on behalf of, a pilot under a plan or system established by an employer which makes provision for pilots, (including any amount paid by an employer for insurance or annuities, or into a fund, to provide any such payment) on account of (A) retirement or (B) expenses in connection with sickness or accident disability, or (C) medical and hospitalization expenses in connection with sickness or accident disability, or (D) death, provided the pilot (1) has not the option to receive instead of provision for such death benefit, any part of such payment or, if such death benefit is insured, any part of premiums (or contributions to premiums) paid by his employer,
