Mr. A.J. Leftwich, Jr.
671 N.E. 118th St.

Dear Mr. Leftwich:

I have your letter of December 29, 1948, regarding your participation in the Pan American Retirement Plan. Needless to say, we are in a rather difficult position attempting to offer you advice as to whether or not you should withdraw from this plan for several reasons, which are, basically: 1.- It is always considered poor policy to advise anyone to drop any form of insurance. In fact, in insurance circles this is known as "twisting", and in some places is actually against the law. 2.- We, of course, are the most anxious to see the ALPA plan become a reality, and if we advised you to drop the PAA plan before our retirement act comes into existence and then anything should happen to our plan, we would be in a most embarrassing position. 3.- My personal recollection as a former PAA employee is that the PAA plan would have some very undesirable features; however, without a careful study being made of both your certificate and any additional information that might be obtained regarding the master policy, I would certainly hesitate before definitely advising you.

I realize the above is not exactly what you wanted and I am, therefore, going to make the following suggestion. The members of the Interim Retirement Committee have made a most complete and comprehensive study of all retirement plans on all air lines. They have had the assistance of one of the country's outstanding professional advisors. I am, therefore, going to forward a copy of your letter and my reply to the committee members, i.e. A.F. Foster, M.A. Gitt, and Clayton Stiles, and ask them to advise you further. I would like to suggest that you forward any additional information that may be of assistance to them directly, and I hope they will be able to give you some definite advice on this matter.

Sincerely yours,
