COLONIAL AIRLINES, INC.

November 5, 1947

TO: All Flight Personnel

From: Chief Pilot

Subject: Summary of Notices to Pilots on Bulletin Board, October 16 to 31, 1947

The Maintenance Department has been having considerable trouble of late with carburetor air scoop flapper valves. They are checking to see if this is caused by poor manufacture, and in the meantime, the writer promised to call all pilots' attention to the matter of using carburetor heat on the ground. Please do not start up with carburetor heat on. If you do, it may cause backfire with subsequent damage to above valves. If heat is necessary while taxiing, it would be a good idea to not apply it until engine has been running for several minutes. Please keep this in mind.

Captain Johnson and the writer have endeavored to improve the pilot lounge set up. Captain Woodworth suggested some while ago that the mail boxes be placed in flight crews lounge in the belief that it would cut down congestion in the dispatch office. We believe this suggestion has merit and have accordingly made the change. In addition, lockers and furniture have been moved to make more room. Please endeavor to keep the furniture in place before leaving and keep things tidy. The matter of others using this lounge is for the flight crews themselves to decide. We are placing a notice on the door that this is the flight crews lounge. All others are guests. So long as the guests do not interfere with the pilots use of this room, we are not asking them to stay out. Please advise your wishes in this respect.

A Supply of ATC Irregularity Reports is going to be kept on the pilots flight plan counter. Please use this form to report any unusual incidents in connection with ATC clearances, communications difficulties, ships at wrong altitudes, etc. Please be specific in filling out these reports; flight ship and number, date and as complete a story as possible so that action can be taken to correct matters.

The writer attended a meeting at Rutland, Vt., Monday, October 20, 1947, wherein the traffic pattern to be used at that field was discussed. The CAA, State of Vermont and local operators and airport manager were present. We held out for all turns to be made in valley to the west. The local operators and airport manager held out for left hand turns. The legal advisor of the CAA states that they cannot.
