Effective February 15, 1948, aircraft operated in scheduled air carrier service carrying passengers during the hours of darkness or under instrument flight rule conditions shall be equipped with an absolute terrain proximity indicator, of a type approved by the Administrator, which will warn the pilot of the altitude of the aircraft above the terrain at altitudes of 2,000 feet, 1,000 feet and any predetermined altitude between 300 and 500 feet inclusive. The above date is not very far away. We would like every pilot who has flown the Hughes Indicator to give his frank opinion of its usefulness. The same also applies to the RCA altimeter, which is installed in another ship. These reports will be evaluated and the instrument selected from that evaluation. In order that you will have the best instrument, it is up to you to put in the best reports possible regarding your opinion of both of these devices. These reports are needed at once.
