SUBJECT: Summary of Notices on Bulletin Board for Period February 16 to 29, 1948

2-19-48 - F.D. Smith

On November 15, 1947, all pilots were advised by the Executive Council that a meeting had been held with the Chief Pilot and the Check Pilot regarding Flight Time Limitations. The pilots were represented by some members of the Executive Council, and after considerable discussion, preliminary definitions were agreed upon. The final meeting on this question was held in Mr. Dykes' office this date, and the following agreed upon.
1. 24 consecutive hours is mutually understood to be any 24 successive hours.
2. A man shall be considered on duty one hour prior to scheduled departure time for Domestic Operations and one and one-half hours before scheduled departure time for Bermuda Operations. (NOTE: This shall apply only to return from duty after any rest period).
3. For "Flight Time Limitations": The actual time from block to block shall be used.
4. A man's relief from duty report begins from the time he arrives at the blocks of his last trip.
5. When the word "day" is used, it shall be construed to mean from "midnight to midnight". 
6. The word "schedule" means a trip or a group of trips.
these decisions were arrived at after much thought on the part of all concerned, and must be observed from this date on.
The Crew Schedule Dept. is being given a copy of this letter and all action in that department will be governed by these definitions.

Our Chief Inspector, Mr. Perreault, has called the writer's attention to a practice which he hopes we will be able to stop. It is the use of chewing gum to dim t he intensity of cockpit warning lights. The writer acknowledges the superior qualities of chewing gum to dim these lights, but the mechanical department who has to clean them up afterwards does not join in this praise. It is a messy job at best and we are asking you please not to use chewing gum for this purpose. We have asked the Maintenance Dept. to have a small supply of masking tape in the cockpit of each airplane which can be used to dim any lights which are objectionable. Mr. Perreault advised that all altimeter warning lights are being equipped with a darker shield which can be opened or closed to govern light intensity. Please advise the writer if you have suggestions other than the above which will keep us from using chewing gum for the above purpose.

There will be a showing of a new type safety vest in the hangar at 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 25, 1948. All pilots are asked to attend the showing of this
