Subject: Inclusion of Sick Pay Leave in UAL Contract and the Extension of Same Beyond Three Months.

Dear Joe:

Most of us are well aware and agree, that we purchase life insurance not as a price set on the value of our lives, but as a means of providing for our dependents and loved ones in the event that our incomes, as breadwinners, has been stopped due to premature death. This is truly one of our moral obligations and by fulfilling this particular obligation, we have gained for ourselves a portion of security.

Premature death, unfortunately is not the only thing that can cut off the families' source of income. Disability of the wage earner by accident or sickness can stop the income just as surely and sometimes just as permanently as premature death itself. The only difference being that the husband must be provided for in addition to the rest of the family, whereas in the case of death, only the dependents care need be considered.

Here, then is a definite lack of security. To eliminate this shortcoming, the best means is by the purchase of accident and health insurance. This insurance can roughly be divided into three types: group, cancellable, and non-cancellable and renewable. Neither the group nor the cancellable type (though most pilots who have accident and health insurance have one of these two types) fills the bill insofar as providing security is concerned, because it can be cancelled by the insurance company at will. The third, and most desirable type is not readily obtainable for the simple reason that it isn't very profitable for the insurance companies. It can be purchased from a few companies, however, and it is naturally more expensive than either the cancellable or group types.

It is here that sick leave, guaranteed by the contract becomes important to us. The longer the waiting period from the time one has an accident or becomes ill and the time when the insurance company
