AFFILIATED WITH THE A. F. of L. "Schedule with Safety" Air Line Pilots Association International 3145 West Sixty-Third Street Chicago 29 Telephone Grovehill 2200 September 27, 1948 473[[image]] TO ALL ALPA CHAIRMAN AND OFFICERS Dear Member: We have all heard the name Jerry Lederer. He used to be quite an important cog in the insurance underwrites' part of air line transportation. Lederer came into greater prominence when he was appointed head of the Safety Bureau of the CAB, in which capacity he served approximately 2 years - 1940-1941. Recently he has been active in the organizing of a so-called "Flight Safety Foundation", about which we haven't received very much information. We do know that he has approached us on several occasions for more cooperation and even financial help. Several of our members have approached Headquarters on the subject, urging support. The matter was placed on the calendar for action by the 10th Convention this November. Now brace yourself. Following is an excerpt from an article that appeared in a small aviation publication, published in Miami, entitled "AIREPORTER", sent in by ALPA Vice President Wood. "SAFETY EXPERT VISITS MIAMI "Jerome 'Jerry' Lederer, well-known in flying circles as an outstanding aviation safety expert, flew into Miami recently on a combination business and pleasure trip. He came down from N.Y. in a NAL DC-6 (3 hrs. 45 min.) captained by his old friend Jim Sammon, also a well-known flight safety engineer." Please note the part, "....captained by his old friend Jim Sammon…." and in particular, "....flew into Miami recently on a combination business and pleasure trip. He came down from N.Y. in a NAL DC-6...." Now isn't that just too lovely!? The late Samuel Gompers, that grand old man of organized labor, said in effect, "Oppose those who oppose us and aid those who aid us." Need more be said? Sincerely yours, AIR LINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION David L. Behncke, President DLB: sm
