NEWS LETTER #3 - 27 July 1948

time in this country on September 1, An extensive promotion campaign is being readied by the major carriers (who will profit most from the new service revenue-wise) and the Air Transport Association. The ATA has earmarked $50,000 for national advertising. The Post Office also will give wide-spread publicity to the new service.

In many cases, air parcel post will be less expensive than air express, to say nothing of slower moving air freight. But the biggest advantage over air express and freight is that air parcels will be delivered to the door of the consignee no matter where he lives, whether in the city of on the farm. Express is only delivered within city limits by express trucks while parcel post will utilize all distribution facilities of the Post Office Department, including Rural Free Delivery.

This all adds up to a tremendous load potential for the airlines. Very likely it will eventually require more schedules to handle the business, which means more pilots and more planes. Whether this will be soon, or whether it will take some months or longer for the service to get into full swing, is a matter of conjecture, since there are no figures or backgrounds on which the base accurate estimates as to the amount of business to be expected. One thing is certain - air parcel post represents a long step forward toward the happy day when all first class mail will move by air whenever it can be expedited.
