still remaining in the lines and dry them out. Just before a complete drop in pressure in the expansion tank the filler neck valve should be opened to allow steam to dry out this line also. If this procedure is not followed it is possible that the system will freeze an it will be necessary to pull the airplane into to hangar to allow it to thaw gradually. It is requested that the pilots remind the ground personnel of the proper procedure should they find that the system is being drained improperly. The Maintenance Department has issued instructions to all personnel concerned as to the proper procedure and there should be no exceptions to this rule. Therefore, a word of reminder to ground personnel is very much in order and, or course, vital to maintaining on schedule operations.

Summer Operation: In the summer time many of the pilots merely close the water shut-off valve under the expansion tank in order to shut off the heating system. This is poor practice since all of the water in the system will gradually be stored in the expansion tank. This will leave the boiler dry and the heating coils will gradually burn out. The proper method of shutting down the heating system is to place the cabin steam shut-off valve in the "OFF" position and close the bi-pass and pressure line shut-off valves, while leaving the water shut-off valve at the bottom of the expansion tank open. This will prevent steam from reaching the radiator as well as the expansion tank and will permit circulation of hot water throughout the nacelle heating system.

If anyone has any questions concerning these or other aspects of the operation of the heating system, please see me and I will try to have them answered.
