There are a few instances where the same pair of identification letters may be assigned to more than one compass locator facility, in connection with different instrument landing systems. However, no difficulty or confusion to the airman is anticipated where adequate distance separation between these facilities exists. Typical of these are ALB, Albany, New York, and BAL, Baltimore, Maryland, where the letters AL will be assigned to the Class OMK facility at Albany and to the Class MMK facility at Baltimore. Similarly, in the cases of LGA, New York, New York, ILG, New Castle, Delaware, and ELG, Wheeling, West Virginia, the letter LG will be assigned to the Class OMK, MMK and MMK facilities respectively. It will be noted that adequate distance separation for the intended purpose exists in all instances. However, it is recommended that the suitability of new three-letter location identifier assignments be examined in this respect to provide satisfactory derivation of compass locator identifiers, at locations where an instrument landing system might be installed in the future, such as at the larger airports. In the event of conflict subsequent to location identifier assignment, suitable recommendations should be made regarding a change in the letter. This may normally be accomplished through the changing of only one letter. However, action in this respect should be take only in connection with actual instrument landing systems.

Certain combinations of three-letter location identification may not be suitable for the derivation of "back course" compass locator identifiers. Typical of these are MEM, Memphis, BRR, Nashville, AMA, Amarillo, and GEG, Spokane. This is considered to be only a very minor conflict, at the present time, due to the limited number of ILS having the backp-course facilites. However, it will be necessary to recommend suitable changes in such location identifiers, where the same letter appears more than once, in the event that the number of back-course facilities is increased.
