Re: ALPA Case 419
(Reserve Pilots' Pay)

Gentlemen:

I have just received Mr. Dykes' notification that the Adjustment Board plans to hear the above grievance at 2:00 P.M. on January 4, 1950. You will recall that at the last meeting of the
Adjustment Board Mr. Dunnion stated that his mind was already made up and that he also knew Mr. Dykes' was made up and that it would therefore be pointless to go through the mechanics of hearing the case. However, since this meeting has been scheduled I think that the pilots should make a brief and unequivocal statement of their position to the Board. In my opinion it would be an error to have a Record made, the reason being that Mr. Dunnion's statement makes it very clear that the Company-members of the Board have closed minds on the subject and that it will have to be resolved by a neutral. I am confident you will agree that in view of this situation, it would be extravagant for Headquarters to send an attorney 800 miles to attend so mechanical a proceeding.

I am anxious to offer whatever advice or assistance I can so do not hesitate to call on me.

Incidentally, the association has forwarded the names of two different neutrals for consideration in the Gitt Case and the Company has neither indicated its acceptance or rejection, nor has the Company forwarded any names for our consideration! [[handwritten exclamation point added above typed period]] If this course of conduct constitutes an exertion "of every effort" by the Company to settle a dispute, I for one am at a loss to recognize it.

With regards and Greetings of the Season, I am

Very truly yours,
