Cooper: Was Captain Gitt influenced in one way or another?

Janas: No

Cooper: Will you give reasons leading up to why the bid was extended?

Janas: I was concerned at that time over contractual provisions which covered a pilot bidding on a temporary vacancy. I had previously indicated to Council #28 that I desired to have their interpretation of the [[strikethrough]] propeer [[/strikethrough]] proper handling of a pilot being relieved of a temporary vacancy to which he bid, because of the vagueness of the paragraph concerning this problem. I desired to know exactly the feeling of the pilots in the regard when Captain Gitt and other pilots bid this vacancy. I suspect that they did not intend to change domiciles and that undoubtedly in the Fall I would be faced with the interpretation of the contract which was contrary to the decision of the Chairman and in order to determine Captain Gitt's thinking on this matter I discussed this matter with him.

Cooper: Did you discuss the same complications with other pilots at this time?

Janas: I believe I discussed this with Captain Silver

Cooper: Did you discuss this to get his advice?

Janas: Partly and partly to learn his thinking as an individual.

Schy: You advised that a domestic bid was expiring June 6th?

Janas: There was a bid for 5 captains vacancies effective June 15th, base station New York on the domestic division.

Schy: What is the connection between the 5 captain vacancies and the Bermuda vacancy?

Janas: If a pilot based at Syracuse desired to return to New York, he probably would have bid for one of the vacancies thus creating a vacancy at Syracuse which would probably have to be bid. As a result of being the successful bidder the vacancy would have been filled by a captain of much lower seniority relative seniority. With a reduction of schedule system flight time this captain would in all probability be demoted to a lower status.
