23 Feb 54 Cushing to Chief Pilot- Reminder on anti-collision lights

30 Ap 54 Safety Chairman to Chief Pilot- "The foremost item at the present time is probably the anti-collision light situation. While in Chicago on the ALPA Safety Forum Airlines and Northeast Airlines as to the maintenance difficulties experienced with such lights. They both replied that on DC-3 operation they had noted no difficulties. I received the following information from Mr. Carl Christensen, of UAL: on the Convair and DC-6 the bulb life was at first about 95-110 hours and some difficulty was found in motor maintenance, a new bulb manufactured by Westinghouse has greatly improved the bulb life situation and motor maintenance has been improved. However, Mr Christensen stated that on DC-3 type aircraft, that the bulb life was practically indefinite and on the DC-4 it presented no problem as on the DC-6 and Convair. On the DC-4 the light can be connected by relay thru the landing gear solenoid switch so as to automatically turn off at touch-down and turn on as the wheels leave the ground. ON the DC-3 this same effect can be obtained by use of the heater ram-air switch or other ram-air switch.

"The use of such a light is becoming increasingly important in our operation, not only in the obviously dense areas of flying, but also in the BTV, SYR, OW and UL areas due to heavy jet fighter traffic. One speaker at the Chicago Forum stated that at modern transport speeds, the transport pilot could not see and evaluate the course of a jet fighter in time to avoid a collision, thus leaving the job of seeing and avoiding a collision up to the jet pilot. Obviously in order to accomplish this, he must see us."

Verbal discussions on this subject have been held throughout the last two years in addition to the above written records.

Yours truly,
