This acknowledges yours of October 9, received here on the 11th. I had delayed my response to this letter inasmuch as John Richardson, EAL-Miami, and a small Eastern group made a safari to Washington for the purposes of exploring what, if anything, could be done concerning the age 60 problem. Further, I have received a preliminary report from Henry Weiss on this subject.

The ALPA Policy Manual, on page 77, under the title "Fixed Retirement Age for Air Line Pilots" states:

"The Association strongly opposes any air line, government agency, or person arbitrarily setting a retirement age. A pilot of any age should be permitted to continue to to perform the duties of an air line pilot so land as he is able to meet the established standards for a scheduled air line pilot." (Board 1950)

You will note this was enacted by the Board of Directors in 1950, and while it has not undergone change since that time, I have felt that we should be able to get support on a current basis from at least the Board of Directors if we are able to attain any meaningful results in such an effort.

The areas in which the Association's efforts usually fall apart are encompassed by a lack of over-all support on any particular project and, in fact, open resistance on the part of at least a portion of the membership.

John Richardson indicated that Senators Spessard Holland and George Smathers of Florida and Representative Dante Fascell would be interested in supporting such a program within the government. Senator Monroney, on the other hand, appears somewhat cool to the effort. 

I talked to General McKee on this subject October 18 and he was more than cool on the matter.
