Dear Herb:

I must apologize for not replying to you more promptly regarding your inquiry relative to my July 18 report wherein I stated:

"... I believe we finally have adequate numbers to develop that data. Preliminary examination is definitely encouraging."

The data and developments I referred to are the same ones I referred to in my letter of March 19 to Gerry Goss and which you have commented upon. Since then the UAL simulator study on the operational effects of incapacitation is well under way and the Executive Committee has approved an Aeromedical Coordinating Committee recommendation to finance a one year research study at Ohio State which has just started. You can be assured that the results of these and any other relevant studies we participate in or become aware of will be furnished you.

The only adverse developments since that March 19 letter of which I am aware are that both the FAA and the ICAO Medical Study Group have reexamined the Age 60 rule and reaffirmed their support of it. There is no point in going into the background of those decisions for I am sure you are familiar with it.

I am aware of one possibly new development. The Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Siegel, has scheduled a meeting of his Medical Advisory Committee for October 23 and 24. One of the agenda items is the Age 60 rule. As you know, I am a member of that Committee and of course will attempt to get reconsideration. Since neither I nor Jim Moser who is furnishing liaison between the Aeromedical Coordinating and Age 60 Committees have heard anything recently, I assume
