IN MEMORY OF OUR DEPARTED FRIENDS

Gene Odenwaldt

As seems to be typical of Eastern pilots, Gene led a very full and rewarding life, one filled with dedication to the things he loved - Eastern Airlines, flying, sailing, his family and friends.

Gene was born in Chicago, but called Cincinnati his home, which it was from the 6th grade on. In high school Chemistry class he met the love of his life, Carol Oberschmidt. They dated exclusively for the next five years.

He enlisted in the Navy and qualified for the Nav Cad program. At NAS Pensacola he excelled in flight and ground school, and discovered his lifetime career. He received his commission and wings in May, 1955, and the long awaited wedding followed a week later.

Having fulfilled his four year obligation with the Navy, Gene joined Capital Airlines, December, 1957.

In September, 1959, Gene left Capital and began his career with Eastern Airlines. After 3 furloughs (two with Capital) Gene returned to active duty in the Navy as an instructor in T2J's. He was commended for 1000 accident-free hours.

Gene returned to Eastern July '63 and was based in DCA where he spent his entire 30 year career as a Boeing 727 Captain.

Gene is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carol, his parents, 3 daughters, a son and 8 beautiful grandchildren.
