News of Local Aviation and Aviators

A young Swiss pilot, given his first instruction by Michael Gitt, Unger Aircraft instructor at Hadley Airport, may see action in the current European conflagration, according to a postcard received by Pilot Gitt this week. The card tells of the safe arrival in Engelberg, Switzerland, of three youths who spent some time at Hadley during the summer, when they visited the U. S. with their father especially to see the World's Fair.
A longing for the safety of U. S. shores is indicated in the card's message.
Charles Ledergerber, 17, writes from Engelberg: "Just when war broke out, we arrived safely in Switzerland. Now I have to go to school in the college at Engelberg. Walter (18-year-old brother) has to go to the military and to make the pilot. Next time I think I have to go also. I think you feel more safe in America."
Charles and Walter and another brother, Harold, 15, were familiar figures at Hadley last summer while Walter was taking flight instruction under Gitt's direction. Before he left the states he had enough time in the air for solo certification. He had no inkling that he was soon to graduate from the aeronca class to military aircraft.
