Since Fresh Meadows is planned to house an average of less than 20 families per acre, most of the site is devoted to landscaped open spaces and recreation areas. Existing trees are being retained wherever possible and wooded areas are being left undisturbed to provide maximum summer shade and natural beauty.
There will be a large main shopping center in which some stores are about to open and two subsidiary neighborhood shopping areas. The entire shopping center will be completed by the spring of 1949. Fireproof, heated garages will be available. Recreational facilities for adults and children are planned. Laundry facilities with modern washing machines and dryers are located at many points on the site. Ample storage space is furnished, including perambulator and wheel-toy storage rooms. Bordering Fresh Meadows is Cunningham Park with its 500 acres containig softball diamonds, playgrounds, bicycle and bridle paths. Within three-quarters of a mile are two golf courses open the the public, one municipally owned. An elementary school is being built by the Board of Education on adjacent land which was deeded by the New York Life Insurance Company for that purpose, so that young children will not have to go outside the site area on heavily traveled roads. It will be opened approximately October 1948. Churches of various denominations are nearby. Two modern high schools and Queens College are within a few miles. From Fresh Meadows the summer beach-goer will avoid the congestion of city traffic on his way to Jones Beach or any north shore or south shore points on Long Island. New York City plans to develop a large area for swimming in Little Neck Bay, less than three miles away.
