HAMPTON WINS

HAMPTON INSTITUTE WINS OVER LINCOLN ELEVEN, 7-3
By P. BERNARD YOUNG, JR.
Baltimore, Md., Nov. 3—Before thousands of gay and enthusiastic rooters who had gathered from all parts of the country to see the versatile elevens of Hampton and Lincoln battle for gridiron supremacy. Hampton swept on to her greatest victory of the year in triumphing over the Lincoln Lions, 7 to 3. For the third time this season she displayed her ability to come from behind and win at the deciding moment.

The Hampton backs and linesman starred in both offensive and defensive play. Capt. T. T. Coleman and Jimmie Coleman continually downed Lincoln backs for losses. The Ruffin brothers, working side by side, played invincible ball. It was their best game of the season. Butler and T. J. Coleman at the guard positions were great hole openers. They played great ball against a great team. Pindle at center was a terror to both the Lincoln teams. He outplayed both Morgan and Jason at the pivot position, making good tackles and perfect passes. Jacobs exhibited wonderful generalship. Though badly hurt in the first period, he pluckily stuck to his position. At the end of the first half he became unconscious. He returned to the game in the last period and ran his team to victory. Bulldog Williams at fullback was probably Hampton's most consistent gainer. He always made gains when gains counted. Hardwick and Gunn played their usual great game. Gunn displayed more plunging ability than usual. Taylor, who substituted for J. Ruffin when he was injured, also played fine ball. Hargrove was a good gainer and an excellent defensive player. He also scored the winning touchdown. Gunn, as usual, scored the extra point. Byrd of Lincoln was undoubtedly the best Lincoln gainer and ran up punts in great style. Pollit and Taylor also played great ball.

Lincoln kicked to Hampton's 20-yard line. Hampton was downed on her 15-yard line. On the first play Williams gained 3 yards. Hardwick hit for 10 yards and a first down. Hampton fumbled, recovered and kicked. Lincoln's ball on Hampton's 17-yard line. Johnson gained 8 yards on two plays. T. T. Coleman downed Byrd for a 2-yard loss. Lincoln kicked to Hampton's 13-yard line and Gunn ran 20 yards. Hardwick gained 7 yards and Lincoln braced for downs. Both teams punted out of danger. The quarter ended with Lincoln in possession of the ball on Hampton's 49-yard line.

In the second quarter on the first play Whirlwind Johnson fumbled and T. T. Coleman recovered the pig skin. Gunn ran 15 yards on a fake play. Pollit was substituted for Johnson and Lincoln braced to hold Hampton. After successive gains of 20, 15 and 6 yards by Byrd and Pollit Hampton stiffened, Ruffin getting Byrd for a loss. Lincoln was unable to gain any more. Crudup then kicked a place kick from the 25-yard line.

Hampton kicked to Lincoln. Byrd advanced 20 yards. An attempted drop kick failed. The first half ended with Lincoln in possession of the ball on her 30-yard line.

Lincoln managed to advance the ball to the 17-yard line in the third quarter, but could not score. In this period Capt. Coleman and Jimmie Jones both downed Byrd for losses. Jones got through the line and downed Byrd for a 15-yard loss. Both teams played spectacular ball, but neither scored in this period.

In the last quarter Jacobs returned to the game and immediately upon receiving the ball worked his team down the field and rushed Hargrove over on an off-tackle play for the winning touchdown. Hampton received the ball on her 10-yard line. Both teams struggled to score. Gunn then intercepted a pass. Hargrove hit for a first down. Hampton was displaying her wonderful ability to score when scores counted and was fighting with a determined and irresistible offense that finally overcame the Lions. After working down to Lincoln's 12-yard line a penalty put Hampton on Lincon's 1 1/2-yard line. Hargrove then hit the line for a touchdown and Gunn scored an extra point.

Whirlwind Johnson was rushed back into the line-up. A great aerial attack was launched by Lincoln, but they failed to complete a pass. The game ended just after Williams had intercepted a pass. This ended one of the greatest grid-iron battles in the history of collegiate football.

Hampton's Indians, champions of the C.I.A.A. kicked their way to a victory over the Lincoln Lions by a score of 12 to 0 here Saturday afternoon at Maryland Park before 1200 fans.

Coach Gideon Smith's sturdy warriors led by the sterling punter and halfback, Baker, not only held Lincoln scoreless but took advantage of the Lions' misplays at critical moments and turned them into scores.

Early in the game Baker's toe gave Hampton the chance to turn a Lincoln fumble into a touchdown.

TRIPLE PASS
Lincoln tried one of those disastrous triple passes on her 28 yard line. "Wildman" Lee, giant sixfooter, in every play, intercepted the throw and raced 12 yard to Lincoln's 8 yard mark. Williams got 4 yards on two tries, then a forward pass over the goal line slipped thru the eager fingers of two Hampton men and Lincoln took the ball to kick it out of danger.

LA MARR'S FUMBLE
La Marr who had replaced Harmon punted down to Hampton's 30 yard line. Baker returned the kick to Lincoln's 38 yard line and La Marr who received the ball fumbled and the Seasiders recovered on Lincoln's 25 yard line. Baker got nine and Byrd eight for a first down. Williams got one, and Baker four. On the next touchdown.

LEE, LEE, LEE
"Wildman" Lee, Hampton's tackle, in every play all over the field paved the way for the second score in the fourth period.

Lincoln was making the effort of the day to tie the score. All thru the game it had found the Hampton line a stone wall. Lincoln's line was no tissue paper either and Hampton's touchdown was due to that bad fum-ble of La Marr's in the first period.

Coach Morrison sent Jackson into the backfield in La Marr's place. He too fumbled as the Hampton line struck him head on. Lee, the "Wild-man" picked up the loose ball and dragged half the Lincoln eleventh for 15 yards until he was brought to earth 5 yards from Lincoln's goal by Dyer's insistence. Williams went over for the score. Baker's kick was wild but Lincoln realized for the first time that the season's third defeat was in store.

The record was broken. No Lincoln team in history ever lost more than two football games in a season. This squad had lost three and was incon-solable.

LIONS' PASSES WILD
Lincoln registered five first downs to three for Hampton. Due to the heavy Hampton line the Easterners were unable to pierce it and resorted to a wild passing game which netted them 18 yards out of fourteen at-tempts. Hampton intercepted three forward passes at critical moments.

Hampton's goal line was never in any serious danger except at the be-ginning of the fourth period. Lincoln had worked the ball from mid-field down to the Seasider's 10 yard line. On the fourth down Preston threw a short pass to Temple who received it on Hampton's two yard line leaving the Lions with just about another yard to go for a first down. Baker punted from behind his own goal post out of danger.

COACH MORRISON
Coach Morrison of the Lincoln aggregation said after the game that he was satisfied, both teams played well.

COACH SMITH
Coach Gideon Smith of Hampton said that the spurt of the Lions was surprising to him. Although his boys figured on downing the Pennsylvanians he did not expect Lincoln to put up such a stubborn defense.

Captains Old Pals
Capt. Williams, of Hampton and Capt. Wells of Lincoln grammar school playmates played football on vacant lots years ago down in Okla-homa. Since matriculating at sep-arate colleges, it was their life am-bition to lead opposing teams on the gridiron.
