A 13-13 Deadlock
Hampton And Seminary

SEASIDERS COME FROM BEHIND TO EVEN THE COUNT WITH DEACONS
Lynchburg. Va.--In the first half of the game that ended 13-13 on the Lynchburg Municipal Park gridiron the Virginia Seminary and College eleven of Lynchburg grabbed two chances to make two touchdowns, but in the third and fourth quarters weakened and allowed Hampton to plow through their line for a tied score. The game was exciting from start to finish, as someone was always doing something thrilling, either making a long run through the line, intercepting a pass, making a spectacular tackle, or trying something unusual.
It was not until the second quarter when Hampton opened up an ill-fated forward pass attack that Seminary [[cut off]] who raced fifty yards with [[cut off]] Hampton backs were ripping off first downs quite consistently, but Seminary's forward defense seemed rather stiff, so the Seasiders resorted to forward passes. The second one was intercepted by Fowler, end of Seminary, who race fifty yards with Hampton at his heels for a touchdown. Fowler tried for the extra point by the drop kick route and made it. Only ten minutes after the first touchdown Henderson, end of Smeinary, snatched a pass thrown by Hampton in a desperate effort to score, and ran sixty yards for the second touchdown of the game. Davis, Seminary's star quarterback, was the center of interest, while Henderson and Fowler, two former Dunbar High School stars, were his starring partners, Davis's punts were unusually high and long, and his passes and handling of punts were excellent.

The second half found Hampton with a 13-0 lead to overcome against a team that had a stubborn defense. The Blue and White Seasiders resorted to punting to gain an anvantageous position. After gaining a fairly good position the Hampton backs tore through Seminary's line for two consecutive first downs. It was easy then to charge Seminary's ever weakening line for a touchdown, which was carried over by Bulldog Williams. The second touchdown came in the first part of the fourth quarter after constant driving. Baker carried over for the touchdown through the line, while a pass from Baker to Byrd brought an extra point to even the score. The balance of the second half was an exchange of punts for a scoring position, but neither could put over the score to break the tie. Of the Hampton clan it can be said that for an opening game it was above the ordinary. Baker and Byrd in the backfield were consistent gainers. Baker, however, was outdistanced on his punts. On the line Davis on end, Robinson in guard, and Yates in center were stars. The forward wall put up a stiff defense that greatly hindered the heavy hitting of the Seminary backs.

RACE FOR C. I. A. A. FLAG GETS UNDER WAY WITH WHIRLWIND PEP

The C. I. A. A. scramble is on and all of the teams are fighting hard to have a say when the title is awarded. Of course, it is rather early in the season and it is hard to say how some of the teams will fare futher up the road. All of the association teams have had a test in the conference and that test has showed many things.

From the present outlook A. and T. has one of the most formidable teams in the association and she has grabbeed the lead from the jump and there is only one thing that will stop the Aggie from taking the seasons honors. A. and T. showed mid-season form in the first game and followed it up with the second affair. If Coach Byarm can keep his machine from cracking under the strain, before November rolls around, the Aggies will be at the top when Thanksgiving rolls around.
A. and T. is heading the list now with two games won, none lost and no ties. Va. Seminary, by virtue of her win over Shaw in the first association game and the tilt with Hampton, gives her a tie for first place in ratings. Union and St. Paul took their first games and are in a deadlock for the next position. Hampton comes in for fourth place with no wins, no losses and one tie. Va. State dropped to fifth position, when she lost to A. and T. State is credited with no games won, one lost and no ties. Lincoln and Shaw are arguing it out for the cellar position.
This week will find six of the C. I. A. A. teams meeting on the field to further advance their cause in titular race. Shaw meets Union at Raleigh, Hampton meets Lincoln in Baltimore and State meets Seminary at Petersburg. St. Paul and A. and T. will have non-conference games this week. If Seminary wins from State, she will take the association lead. A victory for Union will affect St. Paul's position and a win for Hampton will push St. Paul further down the line. That's the way it goes, take it, or leave it.

HAMPTON, Va.--Shaw University in the same boat with the lowly Lincoln Lions, lost its fifth straight game here Saturday when Hampton bowled over them 45 to 0.
Shaw, however, was not without its stars. There was Chambers in the backfield, who had to be watched constantly. He placed Shaw twice within scoring distance in the second half.
Shaw kicked to Hampton and Byrd ran the kick seventy yards to place the ball on the ten-yard line. Bulldog Williams drove through the line for the first touchdown. Williams again carried the ball over for the second touchdown. A Hunter to Byrd pass brought the extra point. The first quarter ended thirteen to nothing.
In the second quarter Shaw's team held Hampton to one touchdown and that was made by the completion of a Williams to Byrd pass. A Hunter to Williams pass brought the extra point.
In the third quarter Shaw kicked to Hampton and the same old story was repeated. Hampton's backs ripped and tore through the line until Beau Guest slipped through for the fourth touchdown of the game. The extra point was not made. The succeeding three touchdowns were made in the last quarter. Bulldog Williams made a wide end sweep from the twenty-yard line for the fifth, Wildman Lee was called back and carried the ball through the line for the extra point. Byrd contributed the sixth touchdown, and Wildman Lee made the seventh.
