"Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven."

"Central struck a familiar note.
Our reprint of the chorus to "Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven" earlier this year in "Telephone Talk" seems to have brought back memories for lots of folks. Many of them were kind enough to write and share with me their recollections of the time when that sad old song was so popular.

And a few wrote to say they weren't familiar with that song, but did remember one called "Hello, Central. Give Me No Man's Land," which was often heard about the time of World War I.

One reader thanked me for the touch of nostalgia, but added, "...please be assured that I much prefer Long Distance dialing and my WATS line to the old 'Hello, Central' way of placing calls..."

I heartily agree.
