Sequatchie County Tenn
January 18th 1866

The following is the particulars of the killing of a Negro man in this County on the 18th inst. as appears from the proceedings had before the Civil Authority in the cause - 
About dark on the evening of the 18th inst Three negro men called at the widow Gotts, and inquired for a black man by the name of George Washington. 
 She informed them that she did not know of any such person. Some gentleman was passing with a wagon a short distance off, at the time, and Mrs Gott told the negroes that perhaps the gentelmen with the wagon could give them the desired information, and the Negroes rode off. In an hour or so, or about 8 oclock, at night, some person caled again at Mrs Gotts yard fence, and on going to the dore, she saw two negro men, who said they wanted to stay all night.
