place the affairs of the Bureau into such hands! Without military aid they will go on committing such outrages against the rights of Freedmen and Union Refugees, until we shall become completely outlawed I am now satisfied that they will be likely to try to procure my removal through Governor Brownlow and others, including some members of the Legislature. I respectfully ask for a copy of their reasons and the names of the applicants for my removal, and a fair hearing, that you may know who is doing right, and who wrong. In a short time I will try to answer your Confidential letter on the subject of Outrages since the 10th of April last.
