I have the honor to acknowledge rect. of your favor of 28th ult which reached here during my absence.

Our rect. of a former letter from you I sent an Officer to inquire into the Character and Conduct of W.N. Thurston who I had appointed Supt. for Miss. County A.K. that Officer has not yet returned. When Mr Thurston was named to me as a suitable man for the that position, I thought I was fortunate in receiving his services I had a very slight acquaintance with him in 1863 but heard him mentioned favorably by those who I receive well I was not then (when I gave him the appointment) aware that he had [[?]] served in any capacity in this Bureau.
