accompany your letter I notice the Freedmen labor under a grave misapprehension as to the stipulations in their contracts with Dr. McGavock they charge that he refused to discharge and pay them at the expiration of 1865 The contract (a copy of which you enclosed [[strikethrough]] binds [[/strikethrough]] extends to Dec 31st 1866.

They also charge that McG. has refused to give them clothing - the contract does not stipulate that clothing was to be furnished.

The alleged cruelties - whipping tieing up of the thumbs &c shall be thoroughly investigated.

I thank you General for the information you have furnished me and shall give the matter as prompt attention as possible
