State of Tennessee 
Hawkins County
Personally appeared before me Wm M Piper Clerk of the Circuit Court of Hawkins County, A.P. Hampton & James R. Pace, both Citizens of said County, and made oath in due form of Law that they have this day examined a certain Grey Mule, now in the possession of John G. Stuart, and claimed to be the property of Jerry Kyle (a man of Color) which has this day been shaved by the Sheriff of said County, and we being called upon by said Sheriff to examine the Brand on said mule do hereby state on oath that we believe that said mule was originally branded "C.S."
