I have the honor to most respectfully make an application for a position in the Freedmans Bureau in your Dept. I have been constantly in the army ever since the Commencement of the late War. I have served as 1st Lieut for over four years. 2 years with the Colored Troups in the department of the Gulf. I was directed by Major Genl. Howard to make my application to you. [[crossed-out]] I have [[/crossed-out]] I have good papers from my commanding Officers in regard to my ability, Character & efficiency as an Officer which will be forwarded if required.

Hoping that my application will meet with favor at your hands and an answer at an early be returned.
